Measurement technique

Measurement of Ionic Contamination

In most fire situations, due to the total or partial combustion of plastic compounds (mainly PVC), chlorides are released. This is in general the most prevalent, and the most potentially aggressive ionic contaminant, in regard to potential corrosion of metals.

In water contamination situations (floodwater, rainwater, fire suppression water, condensation etc.), chloride and bromide are frequently the most prevalent and most potentially aggressive ionic contaminants, in regard to potential corrosion of metals.

For measurement purposes, all project managers are equipped with the RECONTEC Chloride analysis kit (titration method) and the BELFOR proprietary “Quick Test” indicator strips. The indicators provide an immediate qualitative indication of the degree of ionic contamination, which was found to be present on surfaces. The titration method provides a quantitative measurement result.

The measurement equipment is not only used prior to reconditioning work but is also applied for quality control after the cleaning work is finished.

Measurement equipment for the benefit of dehumidification

When, due to a fire, chlorides are released, this can lead to accelerated corrosion. The first step to prevent this from happening is to lower the humidity as this prevents the chloride ions to react with water- parts and corrosion will be slowed down. Next to the necessary dehumidifiers, RECONTEC B.V. has all necessary measurement equipment at its disposal to measure temperature, humidity, air circulation and to log all data regarding humidity and temperature (data loggers).

Furthermore for detection of leakages RECONTEC B.V. is in the possession of an infrared camera.

Other test equipment

Next to the abovementioned measurement tools, all are branches are in the possession of a so called sample case. A case with samples of all our chemicals and with tools to take samples which can be examined in our laboratory.

Furthermore RECONTEC B.V. is able to measure the level of passivity of stainless steel.
