When a ship is struck by fire- or water-damage, and after the first actions have been taken care of, the catastrophe probably first will be reported by the Captain to the ship-owner.
The ship-owner will report the catastrophe to the insurance company and their surveyors will be appointed and instructed.
This is the moment RECONTEC should be informed as well, to be of optimum use with services as:
- Provision of an expert advice/consultancy on salvage and recovery actions to be taken
- Carry out the actual salvage and recovery work
- Project Management
It is common use that a superintendent travels to the ship, together with or at the same time the surveyor does, to perform inspections.
These inspections are, depending on the damage, meant to estimate how serious the damage is, what kind of repairs or replacements will be required to bring the ship back in a safe and, to more or less extent, operational condition and to start preparation for final repairs. In other words: the surveyor and the superintendent often concentrate on the problems concerned with the “primary damage”, which in fact can be complicated enough.
